If you have previously been a guest member you can now only join as a full member - not us being awkward - it's an insurance thing!
Again, it is a condition of our insurance that guests cannot ride with the club more than 5 times or for longer than three months (whichever soonest). Anyone who exceeds this limit will have their club membership immediately terminated.
Section a – Running of the club
1) The name of the club is Manchester Mountain Bikers.
2) The purpose of the club is to provide a forum for mountain bikers to meet other mountain bikers and to ride together.
3) The club will be managed by a committee of members consisting of the club officials (Chairperson, Vice-chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer) and six other committee members. All elected annually except for the treasurer who (for reasons of continuity regarding club bank account holder) is only elected on stepping down or on a committee vote to replace.
4) The club will hold regular committee meetings to discuss club business and future activities.
5) The club values the diversity of its membership and membership applications are welcome from people regardless of class, gender, sexual orientation, religion, race, colour, cultural identity or ethnic origin.
6) Every individual wishing to join the club shall complete an application form agreeing to the club rules and return this with subscription payment.
7) Applications received for joining the club with less than 6 months membership to run will be charged a reduced fee. This will be stated on application form.
8) Membership dates & membership subscriptions renewal:
a. Club membership expires on the 31st March each year.
b. Membership renewal subscriptions are offered to existing Full Members at a discounted rate from the 1st March to the 31st March.
c. After the 31st of March, the membership renewal payment is required in full.
d. Anyone who has not paid their renewal subscriptions by 31st March will be classed as “MEMBERSHIP EXPIRED” and is officially no longer a member of the club.
9) People who have not renewed by 31st March are no longer members of the club and hence there are implications with regards to the club’s insurance. Hence:
a. Anyone who has not renewed shall not take part in any club activities until their subscriptions are paid.
b. Anyone who is classed as “MEMBERSHIP EXPIRED” and attends club rides will have their website access removed immediately.
c. On the 31st April, anyone classed as “MEMBERSHIP EXPIRED” will have their access to the club website removed.
10) All members will be given advance notice of the Annual General Meeting of the club’s committee. Any items for inclusion in the AGM shall reach the Secretary at least 14 days before the meeting.
11) The committee reserves the right to terminate membership of any member who breaks the rules of the club, or whose conduct in the opinion of the committee has rendered them unsuitable for membership of the club, or whose behaviour is having a significant adverse effect within the club or on the reputation of the club.
12) Membership is ONLY open to persons 18 years old and over. Due to the minefield of child protection issues (we have spent a year trying to find a way round these), we don’t accept under 18s as members.
Section b – Ride proposing (via the club calendar) & route leading
13) Rides posted on the club’s rides calendar will be organised by a route leader. The purpose of the route leader is solely to show (to the best of their ability) the route to other riders.
14) Route leaders will provide an estimate (to the best of their ability) of the skill level and fitness level required for a ride.
15) Riders will use ride skill and fitness estimates and the “Skill and Fitness Estimates Explanation” (which form part of the rules) as a guide to check that they are fit enough and have the skill required to take part in a proposed ride. If riders do not believe they have the skill or fitness shown then they should not attend the ride.
16) Skill and fitness values are only estimates. They are highly subjective. Furthermore, conditions of any route can change on the day depending on for example weather, route diversions, modifications to bridleways etc. Hence all riders should ride within their own abilities and exercise their own judgement whilst on a ride.
17) There will be rides posted in the calendar where the route leader has not previously ridden the route. In such situations the leader will still attempt to provide an estimate of skill level and fitness level to the best of their ability.
18) The route leader has the right to refuse, either on the day or in advance, another member or a guest rider from taking part in a ride.
Section c – Riding etiquette
19) Helmets must be worn on all club rides.
20) Riders are responsible for making sure that their bikes are well maintained, fit for proposed club rides and do not present an unnecessary hazard to themselves or other riders.
21) Riders are responsible for making sure that they carry adequate supplies of food, drink, equipment, clothing and repair kit whilst on rides.
22) All riders will show respect and courtesy for other users of the countryside.
23) Whilst on rides, if a rider opens a gate, the same rider is responsible for shutting it.
24) Riders should slow down significantly, or where necessary stop and dismount, around horses.
25) All riders on club rides will avoid entering into argument or confrontation with landowners or other users of the countryside wherever possible.
26) All riders should minimise their impact on the countryside wherever possible. This means for example not dropping litter, not damaging trails by skidding, not damaging fences or dry stone walls etc.
27) When riding on road, all club members should follow the Highway Code.
Section d – Guest Memberships
28) When people apply to become a “Guest Member” of the club, they are given “Guest Member” access to the club website. This lasts 3 months. After 3 months, Guest Members will have their access to the site withdrawn unless they have applied to become a Full Member.
29) Guest Members are entitled to ride with the club up to 5 times. No individual may ride with the club as a guest more than 5 times (This is a condition of the club’s CTC insurance).
30) When a Guest Member has used up all 5 of their guest rides, they must apply for Full Membership in order to continue riding with the club. If they ride again without submitting a Full Membership application they will have their access to the website removed.
31) Applications for Full Membership can be made at any time during a person’s Guest Membership.
32) Guests on rides must contribute £2 to club funds per ride – payable to route leader.
33) There will be a maximum of 5 Guest Members per ride (This is a condition of the club’s CTC insurance). Route leaders should use the club’s calendar to make sure that there are no more than 5 Guest Members on a ride they will be leading).
34) Club members must not bring personal guests (ie “unregistered” guests) along to club rides. Anyone wanting to ride with the club must apply (and be accepted) as a “Guest Member” of the club.
35) Guest members cannot lead routes as they are not covered under the club’s insurance to do so.
Section e – Other Business
36) All members must have a valid/active email address registered with meetup.com. If you remove delete your email address from meetup.com, your website access will be suspended.
37) Club members must not bring personal guests along to club rides. (Anyone wanting to ride with the club must apply (and be accepted) as a “Guest Member” of the club)
38) Should any rider object to any photographs of themselves on the club website, they should contact a member of the committee to arrange removal/deletion.
39) If a club member has their membership terminated by the club’s committee, they will be offered a partial refund of their membership fee. This will be refunded “pro rata” based on how many months there are left to run before annual renewal of membership (e.g. if there are 3 months left to run, 25% of the MMB component of the membership fee will be refunded)
40) Any matter not covered in these rules will be dealt with by the club committee whose decision will be binding.
Note: The word rider in the above rules refers to anyone who is taking part in a ride arranged by the club.
SKILLS, FITNESS & PACE
i) The routes are graded under “good” weather conditions – bad weather will increase the level of difficulty and riders should use their own judgement as to whether they are comfortable with the proposed ride under bad weather conditions.
ii) The grades are subjective and may not always be based on first hand experience of a route (e.g. first time use of a route from a guide book/magazine). Furthermore the difficulty of any part of a route can change overnight with the weather. Use your own judgement!
iii) At all grades, riders need to ride at a speed that allows them to assess if they are competent to ride what’s in front of them. It is not the route leader’s responsibility to warn you of upcoming obstacles. Don’t ride “blind”!
iv) You are the best judge of your ability. There is an inherent risk of injury with mountain biking. Do not ride something that you are not comfortable with.
Skill grade examples (graded from S1 to S5 )
Skill grade S1
Riders would need elementary off-road bike handling skills
It may be possible to ride this grade on a cyclo-cross, trekking or hybrid bike. Semi-slick tyres may be acceptable at this grade. Slick (road type) tyres are not really suitable.
Surfaces are typically firetrack or grass. Majority of ride can be done “in the saddle” i.e. sat down.
NB Skill grade S1 is also typically used for road bike rides in the club calendar.
Skill grade S2
Riders would typically need to have mastered basic off-road riding skills and have more than 3 months experience riding a variety of trails.
It may be possible to ride this grade on a cyclo-cross, trekking or hybrid bike however some obstacles may require dismount or riding around. Ideally for this grade, bikes should be “mountain bikes” with off road tyres. Semi-slick tyres are not really suitable. Slick (road type) tyres are definitely not suitable.
Surfaces will be firetrack, grass, or rough track with some small obstacles such as rocks or roots that require steering round or riding over. Some parts of the ride will need to be done “out of the saddle” i.e. standing on pedals.
Skill grade S3
Riders would typically need to be competent off-road riders and have 6 to 12 months off-road riding experience across a variety of terrain.
This grade requires the use of a full-suspension or hardtail mountain bike suitable for (at the minimum) trail, XC, or all-mountain riding.
Ride may contain singletrack (rough surface), uneven, loose or slippery surfaces such as shale or roots, steep sections with parts of descents that may have an average gradient of 1 in 4 over distances of 100 metres, but may have smaller sections where gradients are greater than 1 in 1 for 2 to 3 metres. The ride may include obstacles such as “football-sized” boulders, small horizontal tree trunks e.g. 8” in diameter. Drop offs that may be up to 12inches in height. There may be unrideable obstacles that will need to be steered around or require a dismount. Vast majority of descents will need to be ridden “out of the saddle”. At this grade it is important that riders can use their past experience to decide whether or not they should attempt to ride the trail in front of them.
Skill grade S4
Riders would typically need to be highly competent off-road riders and have a minimum of 12 months experience covering a wide variety of challenging riding conditions.
This grade typically requires the use of a high quality trail or all-mountain mountain bike. Full-suspension is the norm at this grade, however some riders prefer long-travel hard-tails.
Ride is likely to contain singletrack (very rough surface), uneven, loose or slippery surfaces such as shale or roots, steep sections with parts of descents having an average gradient of 1 in 2 for over 50 metres, but smaller sections where gradients are greater than 1 in 0.5 for perhaps 2 metres. The ride may include obstacles in series such as boulders larger than “football-size”, horizontal tree trunks e.g. 12” in diameter. Drop offs may be over 12inches in height. There will be unrideable obstacles in series that will need to be steered around at speed or require a dismount. Descents will need to be ridden “out of the saddle”. At this grade it is essential that riders can accurately use their past experience to decide whether or not they should attempt to ride the trail in front of them
Skill grade S5
Riders would need to be expert off-road riders and have several years’ off-road experience across a wide variety of highly challenging terrains and environments
This grade typically requires the use of a high quality all-mountain or free-ride mountain bike. Full-suspension is the norm at this grade, however some riders prefer long-travel hard-tails
Ride is likely to cover very steep ground, which would be difficult to walk up. Surfaces may well be loose, slippery and unpredictable. Gradients may be near vertical for short sections e.g. 2 metres. The ride would include many obstacles in series such as boulders of all sizes, large horizontal tree trunks, very narrow tracks with obstacles or drops to the side. Drop offs may be over 18 inches in height. There will be many unrideable obstacles in series that will need to be steered around at speed or require a dismount. Descents will need to be ridden “out of the saddle”. At this grade it is vital that riders can accurately use their past experience to decide whether or not they should attempt to ride the trail in front of them.
Fitness estimates examples (graded from F1 to F5 ) PLEASE NOTE THAT FITNESS DOES NOT = PACE
Fitness grade F1
Route less than 10km. Climbs with gradients less than 1 in 10, largely on-road, firetracks or off road cyclepaths. This grade may also be applied to longer routes on flattish terrain e.g. up to 20 km that are run at a slow pace with regular stops.
Reasonable levels of general health and fitness required.
Fitness grade F2
Routes 10 to 20km. Climbs with gradients greater than 1 in 10, on and off-road. Perhaps short sections with gradients 1 in 5.
Reasonable levels of general health and fitness combined with a moderate level of mountain-bike fitness required (e.g. 3 to 4 previous recent rides)
Fitness grade F3
Routes 20 to 30 km. Sustained climbs over distances of perhaps greater than 2 km with gradient of 1 in 10 or perhaps even 1 in 8. Perhaps short sections with gradients steeper than 1 in 5. Possibly significant proportion of off-road climbing.
Good levels of general health and fitness combined with good level of mountain-bike fitness (e.g. regular biking over 12 weeks previously)
Fitness grade F4
Routes e.g. 30 to 50 km. Sustained climbs over greater than 2 or 3 km with gradient of 1 in 8. Perhaps several sections steeper than 1 in 5. Potentially large proportion of off-road climbing. High level of mountain-biking fitness required (e.g. 6 months of fitness grade v3)
Fitness grade F5
Routes greater than 50km. Sustained climbing for e.g. 5 km at gradients exceeding 1 in 8 with some sections considerably steeper and very short sections perhaps 1 in 2. Potentially large proportion of off-road climbing. Bikes may need to be carried or pushed up hills.
Very high level of mountain biking fitness required (e.g. greater than 6 months of sustained riding at fitness grade 4)
The ride will be held at a social pace. This is the slowest of the pace gradings. Riders will always ride together as a group. There are likely to be frequent stops.
The ride will be held at a pace that is comfortable for all riders. There may be frequent stops. Riders will (in the main) ride together as a group.
This ride will be run at a steady pace, with less stops than the previous gradings. Riders may not always remain together, although the ride will re-group as often as necessary (e.g. at the top of climbs).
This ride will be run at a much quicker pace and with minimal stops. A good level of fitness and stamina will be required for this ride.
This pace grading is for the quickest rides - there will be limited (possibly no) stops and the pace will be kept consistently high. These rides should only be joined by riders with a superior level of fitness.
